Ways to Travel in the Bahamas
You have finished planning a trip to the Bahamas, and now you realize that there
are numerous nearby Bahamian islands you would like to explore and an incredible
number of cays and islets waiting to be discovered. Fortunately, there are many
methods of transportation available to you. Travel in the Bahamas is easy.
Traveling Off-Island
If you are contemplating island hopping, here are two of the most popular
off-island transportation methods:
-
Ferry –
It is an easy, dependable, and relaxing way to get from one island to another. Although
ferries are fairly slow, they provide scheduled departures and are rather inexpensive.
- Water Taxi – It is a popular method of travel in the Bahamas.
It offers an exciting ride, with a chance to admire the spectacular panoramic view.
You may be splashed at times, but that can be a good thing, as the tropical sun
is hot.
Traveling On-Island
If your plans are to remain on one of the main islands, there are several
ways of getting around in the Bahamas to visit the sights:
- Land Taxi - If you are in a hurry, nothing is more efficient than
the land taxi. The drivers will get you to where you need to be quickly. However,
most likely, you will not be able to appreciate much of the scenery on the way.
- Bus - If you are traveling in the Bahamas on a tight budget, buses
are a convenient and cheap way to get from one place to another. Their schedules
run from early morning to about 7 at night.
- Bicycle - If you want to get around the local area and sightsee
at your own pace, a bicycle is definitely the way to go. There are many shops in
the Bahamas that rent out bicycles, along with the proper safety gear. Rental is
usually inexpensive.
- Scooter/Moped - If you wish something a little more exciting than
a bicycle to travel in the Bahamas, scooters and mopeds are a great alternative.
It is possible to rent one for approximately 40$ (USD) a day, but remember that
you are responsible for putting gas in the vehicle, which can be fairly expensive
in the Bahamas.
Choosing beforehand how you will be getting around in the Bahamas should be included
in planning a trip to the Bahamas. You will not want to waste any of your precious
vacation time trying to decide which method of transportation best suits your needs.
